McNamara, who began his career at the Decatur Herald as a sports intern, was instrumental in creating the DPS Athletic Hall of Fame and has been covering DPS athletics for 46 years as sports editor of the Decatur Tribune. He's also written several books about area athletes and teams.

McNamara’s first assignment — the Decatur Turkey Tournament — has remained a special one for him over the decades.

Tom couldn’t be here today, but is honored to be entering the Hall of Fame he helped create. He said this of writing about local sports in the Dec. 5, 2020 Herald & Review:

“I just love it. It’s a passion of mine. I'm writing now about kids that are the grandsons of many of the guys that I was writing about back when I started. It's been a great time and a great run."
