John emerged on the varsity basketball team as a sophomore. His junior year, he was all-city second team with 16.8 points, then as a senior was the city player of the year in 1970, leading Lakeview to a 16-9 season and leading the city with 21.4 points per game. John went on to play at Lincoln College, where he earned team MVP. He went on to finish his playing career at Saint Leo’s in Florida.
