Gary graduated from MacArthur High School in 1960 where he was a 3 year letterman in football, baseball and wrestling. He played football and baseball at Missouri Valley College in 1964. In 1967 Coach Hunt returned to Decatur and began coaching at Lakeview until it closed in 1982, then transferred to MacArthur as a teacher and coach. Coach Hunt compiled a wrestling record of 200 wins, was named Wrestling Coach of the Year in 1972, ‘77, ‘81, and ‘82. Coach Hunt was inducted into the IL Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association Hall of Fame in 2013 and into Missouri Valley College Athletic Hall of Fame for Football and Baseball
